Staff Product Engineer / Web Lead Houston, TX or Fully Remote (U.S.)

Role Overview
First web-focused Staff engineer and de-facto Web Lead at a fast-growing HVAC intelligence platform. You'll own the entire front-end architecture and roadmap: homeowner portal, contractor tools, internal dashboards, and AI-driven interfaces. This is a true 0→1 role with real production scale already in flight-you'll both architect the long-term platform and ship pixel-perfect, high-performance features every week.
Reports directly to the VP of Engineering.Core Responsibilities
  • Define and own the technical strategy, architecture, and roadmap for all web products
  • Build and maintain the core design system, component library, routing, and state-management foundation
  • Ship polished, accessible, and blazing-fast experiences using React + Next.js + TypeScript
  • Partner tightly with Product, Design, and AI/ML teams to surface predictive diagnostics and real-time telemetry
  • Establish front-end best practices: testing strategy, CI/CD, performance budgets, accessibility, observability
  • Integrate complex, data-heavy APIs and real-time streams while keeping interfaces intuitive
  • Mentor future front-end hires and help shape engineering culture as the team scales
Required Experience
  • 8+ years shipping production web applications
  • Multiple years as the primary owner/architect of a consumer- or enterprise-facing web platform that went from early stage to meaningful scale
  • Expert-level React + Next.js, TypeScript, and modern build tooling (Vite/Turborepo/etc.)
  • Proven track record building reusable component libraries and design systems used by multiple teams
  • Experience with data-rich dashboards, real-time updates, and complex API integrations
  • Strong aesthetic sense-able to push back on design and drive pixel-level polish
  • Deep knowledge of web performance, bundle optimization, core web vitals, accessibility (WCAG), and security best practices
  • Hands-on coder who still writes production code daily
Nice-to-Have
  • Previous work in IoT, hardware-enabled SaaS, or industries with real-time sensor data
  • Experience integrating AI/ML outputs into user-facing products
  • Familiarity with monorepos, Turborepo, Storybook, Playwright/Cypress
