Project Engineer - Cambridge

An innovative technology company based in Cambridge is looking for a hands-on and versatile Project Engineer to support the development of advanced imaging and inspection systems used across a range of high-tech industries.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a collaborative engineering environment, working on cutting-edge products alongside multidisciplinary teams across mechanical, electrical, software and scientific disciplines.

The Role

As a Project Engineer, you will support the Project Leader in the design, development and improvement of new and existing products. The role will involve a combination of design, prototyping, testing, documentation and customer-focused engineering support.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Identifying and scoping product improvements and new features based on customer feedback and internal development requirements
  • Working closely with Mechanical, Electrical and Software Engineers, as well as Scientists and Applications teams, to design, prototype, test and evaluate components and sub-assemblies
  • Producing and maintaining project documentation in line with internal development procedures
  • Creating and managing project plans, milestones and deliverables
  • Liaising with manufacturing teams and suppliers to define requirements and develop solutions
  • Managing engineering documentation including work instructions and bills of materials
  • Developing Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) protocols for new products
  • Supporting product commissioning, packing and shipping activities
  • Assisting with specialist device builds where required
  • Providing occasional global site support and customer visits
  • Supporting the Project Leader across wider project activities

The Candidate

Essential Requirements

  • Degree qualified in Physics or a related Engineering discipline
  • Experience with laser alignment and laser optics
  • Hands-on mechanical assembly and prototyping experience
  • Strong problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Strong communication skills across both technical and non-technical teams
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders
  • Able to adapt to an established engineering culture

Desirable Skills

  • PhD in Physics or a related Engineering field
  • Understanding of basic electronics principles, including amplifier circuits
  • Microfabrication, lithography or cleanroom experience
  • Python programming experience
